Embassy briefings are an integral part of Model NATO, enabling participants to ease into their role as the representative of a particular country. The embassy briefings during Model NATO Estonia 2010 will take place in groups of five: an organizer will assist two delegations in visiting their respective embassies. This will not only allow participants to learn more about different NATO member states but also enable the delegates to acquire a fuller picture of the diverse world of international diplomacy. Due to the hectic schedule of diplomatic missions it may occur that some delegates will not be able to visit their respective embassy. However, the organizers will do all in their power to ensure that everyone will have a chance to meet an expert of the country they are to represent.
The first day of the event will also feature lectures by experts in the fields of international relations and NATO. Although delegates are expected to do extensive background studies prior to the event, there are things that cannot be read from books or checked up from Wikipedia. The lecturers, with their extensive personal experience, will be able to give the participants more tangible information about what the world of international affairs is all about. To make best use of this rare opportunity be sure to ask questions.
During the course of the last 2 days, MNE will simulate two of NATO's principal bodies, the North Atlantic Council (NAC) and the Military Committee (MC) with the representatives of the 28 member countries represented by our delegates. The rest of the NATO structure and influential parties: committee chairs, secretariat, third parties and home government institutions are provided by the organizers. Both the NAC and the MC have their own roles and agendas but for the sake of the simulation, the days will be mainly dedicated to negotiating a common position on a crisis, fabricated by the organizing team, to which different NATO member states would have radically different, conflicting perspectives. Therefore success will require skill in teamwork as the MC is subservient to the NAC (thus participants in the NAC should show appropriate delegation skills) and negotiating as it will all depend on how much will countries be willing to forfeit their goals in order to achieve consensus.
To give the delegates a chance to relax and ease back from the tense atmosphere of negotiations and conflicting interests, a reception will be held by EATA in honor of the distinguished guests. What better chance to relax, mingle and make new acquaintances while enjoying a glass of wine. For men a black suit and a comparable outfit for women is required.
